The over-the-counter drug brand Imodium, which is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc., may increase the effect of opioids when consumed at the same time. While Imodium, along with its generic forms, is intended to treat diarrhea, people also abuse it by taking large amounts to induce a high. Taking too much can cause severe cardiac problems. These effects are worsened with the interaction of other drugs such as Zantac. Litigation has been building against the drug manufacturer as more and more law firms take on these cases for clients.
Opioid addicts are turning to Imodium A-D and similar medications to get a heroin-like high. Imodium has been available over-the-counter in the United States since 1988. The FDA first started getting reports of serious adverse events in 2010. Loperamide hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Imodium, has euphoric effects. Because the drug can cause euphoria, it is sometimes misused for a high. The FDA has repeatedly cautioned the public about severe adverse effects of misusing loperamide, including heart problems and even death.
In September 2019, the FDA approved new package-size and package-type limits for the OTC tablet and capsule forms of the Imodium. The FDA’s action limits the package sizes by limiting each carton to no more than 48mg and provides for unit-dose packaging for the affected products. The FDA believes this could reduce the rate of overdose and death.
The FDA requested that online distributors help mitigate the risks of loperamide abuse by not selling more than one package of the drugs to each customer. The agency also said they are taking steps to ensure that consumers can easily read the product label warnings for drugs before they purchase them.
Loperamide may result in some general side effects, including:
- Dry mouth
- Stomach discomfort
These side effects result from using the drug as directed or prescribed. The FDA has warned that dangerous side effects may occur with overuse or abuse.
There are a number of serious heart-related risks, including:
- Abnormal heart rhythms
- Serious cardiac events
- Long QT syndrome (heart rhythm condition that can cause fast, chaotic heartbeats)
- Heart electrical cycle disruption
- Torsades de Pointes (type of abnormal heart rhythm that can lead to sudden cardiac death)
- Sudden cardiac death
- Loss of consciousness
- Cardiac arrest
Now Is the Time to Acquire Imodium Cases
- Lowest costs in 2020. Current case costs are the lowest we have seen.
- Reach a larger audience. Stay-at-home orders from the coronavirus pandemic mean more people are watching TV and engaging with digital content throughout the day. Now is a great time to reach your target audience.
- Costs to acquire cases have declined. The increased viewership, in addition to reduced rates, bonus airings, and discounts, has led to reduced costs to sign cases.
