Google Expands AI Search Links While SEO Reporting Remains Limited

Google Pushes More Links Into AI Search Results

Google introduced five new link features connected to AI search experiences.

Inline links now appear beside supporting text within AI responses instead of just at the bottom of the answer. Google also added an “Explore new angles” section that recommends related articles after an AI response finishes.

The company expanded its “Perspectives” feature as well. AI results can now pull discussions and quotes from Reddit, forums, and social platforms while linking directly to those conversations. Desktop users may also see hover previews showing publication names and page titles before selecting a result.

Google also introduced subscription labels for publishers. AI Overviews and AI Mode can now identify whether a user already subscribes to a publication. Google stated early testing showed users clicked those links more often, though the company did not release supporting data.

According to Hema Budaraju, Google is expanding link placement across AI-generated search experiences to help users discover additional content and sources. Google’s recent rollout of expanded website link displays inside AI Overviews further increases how publishers and businesses appear within search results.

Websites Still Cannot Measure AI Search Traffic Clearly

Google’s latest update focuses heavily on content discovery, but publishers still lack clear reporting on how these AI links perform.

AI Overviews continue answering many searches directly inside Google Search. When users receive enough information from the AI response itself, fewer visitors may continue to the original source.

That concern grows when AI responses summarize legal analysis, forum discussions, or news reporting directly inside search results. Users may consume the information without ever visiting the publisher responsible for creating it.

Amanda Silberling reported that Google’s latest AI search update expands how AI results surface discussions from Reddit and other online communities, increasing the amount of third party commentary displayed directly within Google Search.

Some of the new link placements could improve engagement. Even so, Google has not released reporting that confirms whether inline links, hover previews, or subscription labels increase referral traffic.

Search Console Still Leaves Major Reporting Gaps

Google Search Console still does not separate AI Overview clicks, AI Mode traffic, and traditional organic search performance into separate categories.

SEO teams cannot determine whether inline citations outperform standard links or whether subscription labels improve click through rates. Publishers also remain unable to isolate how AI-generated search experiences affect overall traffic patterns.

For law firms publishing legal blogs, practice area pages, and educational resources, the missing data creates uncertainty around content performance and lead attribution.

What Law Firms Should Monitor

Law firms rely on search visibility to connect with prospective clients researching legal issues online. As AI-generated answers occupy more space inside search results, firms may experience changes in user behavior before a website visit ever occurs.

Firms should closely monitor branded traffic trends, lead quality, search impressions, and engagement patterns as Google expands AI search features. Legal content that previously generated direct visits may now receive impressions without the same level of click activity.

Understanding those changes requires close performance tracking and ongoing SEO adjustments.

Why Accurate SEO Reporting Matters More Than Ever

Google continues adding new AI search features while offering limited transparency into how those placements affect publishers. More links inside AI responses may create additional exposure, but exposure alone does not confirm meaningful website traffic or qualified leads.

For law firms investing heavily in search marketing, understanding how AI search impacts client acquisition will become increasingly important throughout the next stage of Google Search updates.
