Google Tests Drop Downs in AI Overviews, Pushing Top Law Firm Rankings Lower

AI Overviews Are Taking Up More Space

Google appears to be testing a new presentation format within its AI Overviews. The update introduces expandable dropdown panels that allow users to reveal additional information directly inside the summary.

The layout works like an accordion. Each topic appears as a heading that can be expanded to display more detail while the other panels remain closed.

Early screenshots show the feature organizing information into categories such as key components, preparation details, and variations. Selecting a category opens the related text beneath that heading.

Search observer Shameem Adhikarath first shared screenshots of the format on X. Others have since reproduced the layout while running common informational searches, which places the AI Overview at the top of the results page with content grouped into expandable panels.

The design also introduces large areas of empty space around the summary. Some elements appear unevenly aligned, which suggests the feature remains in testing rather than a full rollout.

How The New Layout Reduces Organic Visibility

AI Overviews already occupy a large portion of the search results page. An expandable format could be designed to increase the amount of time users spend inside the AI generated summary instead of exploring traditional results.

When information is hidden behind dropdowns, users have to click more within the overview rather than continue scrolling. That increased engagement can eventually prevent the need for users to look for organic search results.

The layout itself may also affect visibility. Extra spacing inside the expandable sections can push organic listings farther down the page, which limits how many results appear above the fold and increases competition for the remaining positions.

Google continues testing AI focused search features that change how users move through results. Earlier experiments, including the AI Mode “See More” button, already demonstrated how interface design can influence which websites receive the first clicks.

For firms that rely on search traffic, changes like this affect how potential clients encounter legal information online.

What This Google Search Test Means for Law Firm SEO

Search interface experiments rarely stay limited to small tests. Many early features later influence how Google presents results across a wider group of queries.

Google’s AI summaries often include links to outside sources that support the information shown in the overview. Pages with clear structure, authoritative legal insight, and strong ranking signals have a better chance of appearing among those references.

Legal content should address common client questions in a direct and organized format. Clear headings, focused topics, and thorough explanations help search systems interpret the subject matter and connect it with relevant queries.
